Are you eating at least 8 - 10 servings of fruits and vegetables per day? Many people struggle with getting in this amount, including many of my clients, family, and friends. They will often ask me “How can I add more greens to my diet?”
Today, I am sharing my top 3 clever ways to eat more greens every single day:
1. Use more herbs: Not all greens are veggies! Herbs are plants, so they pack in just as many nutrients as vegetables. Having a variety of herbs in the kitchen is a super easy way to add more greens to any dish! Try having any of these herbs handy: parsley, rosemary, thyme, dill, oregano, mint, and basil.
Bonus Tip: You can also plant these herbs in the summer or keep them potted in the house, in a sunny location, all winter long.
2. Start first thing in the morning: There are so many ways to get your greens in the morning; Add spinach or kale to any of your egg dishes, make a green smoothie packed with veggies, add microgreen sprouts and edamame on your avocado toast, and finally, make a cucumber and tomato morning salad (try with crumbled feta and include fresh herbs- yum!).
3. Prep, prep, prep: This means chop, chop, chop! I’m a big fan and advocate of meal-prepping, so once you have all your herbs and vegetables in the kitchen, you want to wash, chop, organize, and store them accordingly. Having this prep done in advance will save you time when you’re ready to cook; Just grab and go! This method will also prevent you from eating out because freshly chopped veggies or pre-washed lettuce will be ready for use, ensuring a homemade meal.
Adding these simple tips on how to incorporate greens into your diet every day is a great way to establish optimal health. It will also help you develop a healthy “diet-mentality” because you will identify what-to-eat and what-not-to-eat, just from handling your own food.
If you begin to make a conscious effort to have a variety of herbs and fresh produce in the house, you will stress less about what to make for dinner, you will stress less about calories because these foods are all natural; and with the proper prep, you will even prevent food waste.
