Earth Day is a wonderful opportunity to get in touch with nature, but as they say… “every day should be Earth Day!”

Environmentalism, connecting to nature, being mindful of choices as consumers, planting and growing gardens are all ways we can honor the Earth. These all play a role in healing the planet.

The Earth’s soil needs to regenerate because overtime it has been depleted in large part due to industrial and conventional farming practices. This includes the use of GMO’s (genetically modified organisms), overuse of harmful pesticides, which not only deplete the soil but can make you sick, tilling the land, and large-scale monoculture practices, which lead to soil depletion.

But there is hope, and it’s called Regenerative Farming! Regenerative farming practices are organic, natural, and can enrich our topsoil by capturing carbon in the atmosphere above and sinking it in the ground. This is key to increase the nutrients in crops and yield more food to harvest.

Regenerative regenerates! Their methods include:

  • No chemical pesticides or insecticides

  • No tilling

  • Leaving no bare soil

  • Leaving in roots or stalks in the ground

  • Rotating crops

  • Integrating livestock to graze and fertilize the land

What can we do on Earth Day?

1. Support regenerative operations! Look for organic and non-GMO labels, buy local, buy at farmer’s market, and cook at home… a lot!

2. Join the watch party! Connect to nature in the comfort of your own. This Earth Day, the films ‘Kiss the Ground’ and ‘Common Ground’ will be available to stream worldwide on Prime Video! Truly uplifting messages, ethics, and hard work from farmers who are already successful in the regenerative movement. Watch & be inspired:

3. Clean up litter! For the past 4 years on Earth Day, I take a recycling bag, a garbage bag, and my trash pinchers (and a friend or two) and walk around different parts of the city cleaning up litter. This year will be my 5th year! It is very fulfilling and nice to see what kind of an impact I can make as one individual. I am quite aware that it’s other individuals who are littering, and this is something I’d like to see a BIG change in. People’s mindfulness about their trash. Your can or cup or wrapper = your responsibility. In the meantime, I have adopted the practice that although it’s not my trash, it is my planet!

Here’s a glimpse at my last 4 years:

I leave you with this quote that inspires me to take care of Mother Earth, I also wholeheartedly believe this is true when it comes to personal health and well-being.

“Anything else you’re interested in is not going to happen if you can’t breathe the air or drink the water. Don’t sit this one out. Do Something.” -Carl Sagan
