Heart Month is back! February is known as Heart Month not only because of Valentine’s Day, but also to bring attention to the importance of heart health.
Cardiovascular diseases are one of the leading causes of death in both men and women in North America. However, up to 80-90% of heart disease is preventable! Therefore, it is such an important time to commit to making healthy diet and lifestyle choices.
My Family History
If you follow my blog, I have reported many various ways how to keep your heart healthy and strong, from getting adequate exercise every day to eating an anti-inflammatory diet.
This is a very important and personal subject for me, as my father passed away from a heart attack before his retirement at age 59. My mother also got diagnosed with myocarditis 5 years ago, which has left her living with a defibrillator from now on. However, she improved her condition and even increased her heart percentage that was failing by committing to light exercises every day like walking, taking the stairs, gardening, and doing yoga. She also makes sure to eat protein and greens at every meal, while keeping the rest of her day relatively low carb. She even began to do intermittent fasting, which means she cut out snacking at night and just has a tea before bedtime.
These are the types of actions we must take to be able to slow down and reverse, yes reverse, any chronic diseases.
This Is Not Hereditary
The science of epigenetics has proven that it is environmental factors that determines whether we become ill, and not our DNA or our family history. We do not have to walk around thinking we are ticking time bombs who will one day become ill with the exact same thing our parents or grandparents had. We all have genes that can be switched on or never at all! Once again, it is environmental factors that will determine illness or wellness, which include diet and physical activity, but also stress levels.
This is where massage therapy and Reiki can help. Sometimes we need guidance on how to decrease our stress and open our hearts to truly flourish. It is one thing to take an hour and schedule a massage in your busy life, but it doesn’t last long if the mind continues to stress after the fact. We must do the inner work to harmonize the body and mind to the fullest.
Past traumas do not need to be repeated over and over in our physical lives, nor in our minds. This can keep the heart in a stressed state. By taking time to pause and reflect, recognizing what went wrong, accepting the facts, taking action to fix them, and then in return sharing the way with others so that others may avoid pain and loss is the ultimate way to heal! This is also why I share my personal story.
